Proposed FDA Regulation Threatens to Close Last Operating Ybor City Cigar Factory in Tampa
On Monday, June 30, J.C. Newman Cigar Company will cover two sides of its iconic clock tower with appeals to save its historic factory.
The giant banners urge people to “Save This Factory” by visiting www.savecigarcity.com. There, visitors will learn more about proposed FDA regulations and how they can comment to exempt the last operating cigar factory in Cigar City (Tampa), Florida.
Measuring 20’ by 30’, the signs will be on display from the south and east walls of the tower for the daily commuters who drive past the factory every day.
WHERE: J.C. Newman Cigar Company 2701 N 16th Street
WHEN: A crew will start hanging the banners at 6:00 a.m. Banners are anticipated to be on display around 1:00 p.m.
WHY: In April 2014, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published proposed regulations on the cigar industry. Complying with these regulations as drafted would be so cumbersome and cost-prohibitive it may force the last operating cigar factory in Tampa (J.C. Newman Cigar Company) to close.
