WUSF Tampa

WUSF Tampa 89.7 won five distinct journalism awards at the 2014 Society of Professional Journalists’ recent Sunshine State Awards.  The station received recognition for best newscast, general coverage, feature reporting and public affairs.  Celebrating its 50th anniversary, WUSF Public Media has received a total of 26 state, regional and national journalism awards in 2014.

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by our peers and colleagues at the Society of Professional Journalists,” said JoAnn Urofsky, general manager of WUSF Public Media.  “These five journalism awards are a testament to our team’s unwavering commitment to proving quality journalism. We are extremely proud to receive of the staff and the awards.”

More than 100 journalists representing newspaper, online and broadcast organizations from throughout the state of Florida attended the event at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. SPJ Florida partnered with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists South Florida chapter to present the awards.

The WUSF Public Media news team won awards for:

1.      Third Place: Best Newscast – Radio: Carson Cooper

2.      Second Place: General Coverage – Radio: John O’Connor, Common  Core

3.      Third Place: Feature Reporting – Radio: Bobbie O’Brien & Andrew Casey, Autism Defined by Those with the Diagnosis

4.      Second Place: Public Affairs – Radio: Dalia Colon, Bobbie O’Brien & Carson Cooper, Florida Matters: Curbing Gun Violence

5.      Third Place: Public Affairs – Radio: Lottie Watts, Florida Matters: Medical Marijuana
